Caravan of migrants plan to seek asylum

Some people in Florida might have heard about a caravan of migrants moving through Mexico on their way to seek asylum in the United States. The operation has been criticized by President Donald Trump.

The migrants are fleeing violence in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. On April 9, they arrived in Mexico City, where many went to a Roman Catholic shrine to pray. There are at least 200 migrants in the caravan, and organizers say it is twice the number they anticipated. President Trump has said that the situation emphasizes Mexico's unwillingness to stop illegal immigration.

One man says he fled Honduras with his wife and three children after a gang killed a relative and threatened his family. He said that he knew a lack of official confirmation meant that his chances of being granted asylum were slim. Another Honduran man said his mother had asked him to return home because she was ill, but he had not yet decided what to do. Some of the migrants said they did not plan to go any further than Mexico.

The complexities and fast-changing nature of U.S. immigration law means that information may quickly become outdated. A person who is seeking asylum or to remain in the country for some other reason or whose relative is seeking to remain might want to consult an attorney. The attorney might be able to explain what avenues for immigration are available as well as assist with paperwork. This can be complex, and an error could delay a person's case. Even if a person has been threatened with deportation, this is not an inevitable outcome and an attorney might still be able to help.
