Many U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Filing Fees Increase

The recent changes to U.S. immigration and naturalization fees mark the first adjustment in over seven years. Effective April 1, 2024, these fee modifications impact various immigration processes, such as employment-based visas, work authorizations, permanent residency applications, and naturalization requests.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the fee adjustments aim to better align with agency needs and enhance service efficiency. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou highlighted that these changes enable the agency to deliver more timely decisions to applicants.

While some fees have increased, such as those related to employment-based visas and naturalization, others, like the replacement of permanent resident cards, have slightly decreased. Additionally, USCIS emphasized its commitment to utilizing the increased revenues to improve the overall customer experience and address backlog challenges.

The decision to update fees followed a comprehensive review process that incorporated feedback from various stakeholders, including over 5,400 public comments. USCIS stated that the finalized fee structure remains consistent with or lower than what was initially proposed in a rule change published in January 2023.

Furthermore, USCIS introduced certain incentives to encourage online applications, such as a standard $50 discount for online submissions and reduced fees for Employment Authorization Document applications under specific circumstances, such as adjusting status or applicants under the age of 14.

It’s worth noting that while this fee adjustment represents the first comprehensive change since December 2016, USCIS had previously announced increases for certain processing fees, such as Form I-907 for Premium Processing, to accommodate inflation. These adjustments came into effect in February, impacting various premium processing fees across different categories.
